SCONUL 7 Pillars build on Infolit iSchool

Early attempt 7 pillars

This page has information on the progress of the build oinformtion literacy based on teh SCONUL 7 PIllars model.

http://slurl.com/secondlife/infolit%20ischool/21/47/22/

This is a work in progress.

First there are background notes, nd then notes taken at a meeting on 2nd October 2008.

The next meeting is at noon SL time on Wednesday 8th October. In the meantime the area with the build on it is open for members of the Information Literacy Group to add material (you will need to Activate the Information Literacy Group tag in order to be able to Build on the land). Or simply come along to see what the progress is and pool ideas of what to do and how to take it forward!

Background: Developing a 3D representation of Information Literacy based on the SCONUL 7 Pillars model

Activity led by Sheila Yoshikawa (in RL, Sheila Webber, Department of Information Studies, University of Sheffield, UK)

People can contribute ideas, so you don’t have to be able to build. If you do build, it would be helpful to share the item with the group (i.e. Edit the item and change the permissions) so that if necessary the build can be linked together and moved somewhere else (or copied). (This may not be possible with items you did not make yourself.)

---------------

Aim of the build

- The overall aim is to help people develop their understanding of information literacy, and think about themselves as information literate people.

- Since the overall framework is the SCONUL (Society for College, National and University Libraries, the organisation for these libraries in the UK http://www.sconul.ac.uk/) 7 Pillars model of Information Literacy, a specific aim is to help people understand this framework and its application.

- The target audience is learners. There is a specific group who I want to use this with in the next few weeks, but hopefully it will be interesting to a wider audience.

- The specific group of learners that I want to use this with first of all are BSc Information Management students at the University of Sheffield (see http://www.shef.ac.uk/is/prospectiveug/courses/im.html). Graduates from this programme go into a variety of jobs – managers, marketing, management consultancy, knowledge management, business intelligence, some become entrepreneurs (sometimes library jobs, but that’s a minority). Also some go on to do Masters degree (marketing, management, and information management are popular) and now and then doctoral studies.

** Further notes

- I don’t want to have everything bouncing out to websites, web tutorials etc., although obviously some of this will be useful. I would like to have a good deal that people can explore, discuss and interact with within Second Life.

- Teleport links to other relevant builds etc. will be great (though I don’t want people bouncing out and then getting lost, so will have to think how this is best incorporated – e.g. perhaps just a few “built-in” teleports and notecard(s) with more – perhaps a network of IL related builds with complimentary teleport links!)

- I want to cover all the Pillars and not have it dominated by things to do with searching and evaluating. There need to be some examples – perhaps with emphasis on examples which follow through all the pillars – but it might be confusing to incorporate too much information about specific search tools (for example)

- I want to incorporate more material and examples from students – with them co-building if they have skills, and me adding material they have done (with their permission and acknowledgement, obviously)

- In the end this may need to move somewhere else (into the sky) if it gets large!

- I think it will be good to other builds with alternative models of information literacy e.g. I plan to develop ones based on our research into UK academics’ conceptions of information literacy. People at more advanced levels could then compare them and discuss differences.

**Contributing ideas to this build

I would like to leave the build open to members of the Information Literacy Group to add to as they wish, but I’ll have to monitor this to make sure it isn’t abused (e.g. I might need to make the group invitation-only to deter griefers – more worried about people deleting stuff that adding!)

**The SCONUL 7 Pillar Framework

You can click the Pillars and get an explanation on each Pillar, or go to the website. Plus you can take home the 7 Pillars 3D model if you like!

The 7 Pillars model was developed by the SCONUL Working Group on Information Literacy and is the intellectual property of SCONUL. It is made available to use freely as people want, but SCONUL should be acknowledged when using it. See http://www.sconul.ac.uk/groups/information_literacy/seven_pillars.html

**The Pillars are:

Pillar 1. The ability to recognise a need for information

Pillar 2. The ability to distinguish ways in which the information ‘gap’ may be addressed (i.e. the gap between what you know and what you need to know)

Pillar 3. The ability to construct strategies for locating information

Pillar 4. The ability to locate and access information

Pillar 5. The ability to compare and evaluate information obtained from different sources

Pillar 6. The ability to organise, apply and communicate information to others in ways appropriate

Pillar 7. The ability to synthesise and build upon existing information, contributing to the creation of new knowledge

October 2nd notes

These are ideas that came up at the session on October 2nd 2008, held on Infolit iSchool, discussing the build

Build is at:

Remember, if you visit the buiild, it is a work in progress!

---------------------------

Present at the meeting on 2nd October 2008 were: Sheila Yoshikawa, Sigfrid Skytower, Maggie Kohime, HVX Silverstar, Annie McMinnar, : Paulson Oldrich,  LindseyGraveline Xue, Aidenn Brooks, Kadja Halfpint, Zombie Greenwood , Mermet Larsson.

The ideas are presented in no particular order.

- One possibility would to get the students to rank the seven pillars in the correct order (mix them up)

- Having pathways through the pillars, in different colours (to distinguish them from each other) - showing that it is an iterative or cyclical process

Building Information Literacy

- Students building their own paths, or stepping stones, through the pillars

- Students (in RL) using mindmaps and colouring in on the mindmaps where they have got to in teh pillars

- Including a diagnostic tool (using a 10 point scale) mentioned by Annie McMinnar.  This would possbily be at the start of the build area? Or the end?

- Teleport links to other relevant builds and information in SL (but would need a way of the students finding their way backeasily -- implies cooperation)

- Giving students their own 7 pillars model - they represent their capabilities in each pillar by altering the size. Amalgamating theresult in some way?

- Sheila brought out the opinionator (immediate creation of a pie chart when avatars walk onto different bits of the Opinionator). This could perhaps be used to ask people about their ideas on IL at the start. (This is now out and can be used)

- Making the build multi level - spiralling upwards (or more advanced on upper levels)

- Creating Youtube content to illustate different pillars "wish I'd done this" "This is how I did that". LInking and selective streaming. Sheila mentioned the HEA video on plagiarism which has snippets from students and lecturers. Could also use machinima (if someone makes it ;-)

- Using comic book application to make comic strips about some of the pillars

- Having a graphic of the Boolean Logic Venn diagram - Aiden said he would give it a try.

October 8th Notes

There was a Second meeting on October 8th 2008. Aiden contributed a Boolean Logic Venn diagram using a holodeck, so you could click to get AND, OR or NOT. Ambitiously, we are thinking of having a "base" model (it will go up into the sky when the next work is done on it) which could have copies with different examplaes etc. A "diagnostic" area could stay on the ground.
